What this code means

The knock sensor "listens" for the rattle of detonation (pinging) and lets the computer pull ignition timing to protect the engine. P0325 means the knock sensor circuit isn't reading correctly. Usually it's a failed sensor or a wiring/connector problem (corrosion is common because the sensor sits in a harsh spot). With no usable knock signal, the computer runs conservative timing as a safeguard, which costs a little power and fuel economy but keeps the engine safe.

How to fix P0325

Moderate — doable at home with common tools and patience

  1. Inspect the knock sensor connector and wiring

    Find the sensor — typically low on the engine block or under the intake manifold on bank 1 — and unplug its connector, looking for corrosion, oil intrusion, or a damaged wire. The sensor lives in a harsh, wet location, so a corroded connector is a common and cheap fix.

  2. Test the sensor and its circuit

    Measure the sensor's resistance against the spec in your service information, and check continuity of the harness from the connector back toward the ECM. An open reading at either point confirms where the electrical fault sits.

  3. Replace the knock sensor

    If the wiring checks out, replace the sensor — the most common repair for this code. Torque it exactly to spec: knock sensors are torque-sensitive, and one that's too tight or too loose reads wrong and can set the code all over again.

  4. Clear the code and verify the fix

    Clear the code and drive through a mix of city and highway conditions. Because the computer checks this circuit continuously, a remaining fault will bring the code back quickly — if it stays gone, you're done.
