What this code means
On a turbocharged or supercharged engine, the computer targets a specific boost pressure and relies on a control system — typically a wastegate on turbos or a bypass valve on superchargers — to bleed off excess. P0234 sets when measured boost climbs meaningfully above target: the engine is being force-fed more air than it was designed to handle at that moment. Common causes are a wastegate stuck closed, a seized or disconnected wastegate actuator or linkage, a blocked or split boost-control hose, a faulty boost-control solenoid, or on diesels, variable-geometry turbo vanes stuck in the high-boost position; a faulty boost sensor can also exaggerate the reading. This is the more urgent sibling of P0299 (underboost), because genuine overboost raises cylinder pressures and can lead to detonation or mechanical damage, so most computers respond by cutting fuel or closing the throttle, which you feel as a sudden power loss.
