OBD-II trouble code

P0206

Serious

Injector Circuit/Open - Cylinder 6

Get this repaired soon rather than someday. Every mile driven with cylinder 6 dead pushes unburned fuel into the catalytic converter, and converters fail expensively when overheated. Baby the throttle in the meantime; a flashing check-engine light means park it.

What this code means

P0206 flags an electrical fault in the circuit that fires the cylinder 6 fuel injector. The engine computer pulses each injector and verifies the circuit responds correctly; here it caught an open, a short, or resistance outside spec on cylinder 6. Because the failure is electrical, it is a different animal from a clogged injector — fuel-system cleaners are irrelevant to this code. Work through the likely causes cheapest-first: a connector that's corroded, loose, or was left unplugged after other service; wiring chafed through against a hot or sharp edge; then the injector's own coil winding failing open or shorted. A dead injector driver inside the engine computer is possible but genuinely uncommon. Expect cylinder 6 to be missing entirely, which is why the P0306 misfire code so often rides along.

Symptoms you might notice

  • Cylinder 6 dead or cutting in and out — P0306 commonly set as well
  • Rough idle you can feel through the steering wheel and seat
  • Down-on-power feel, worst under acceleration
  • Check-engine light, flashing if the misfire is active
  • Occasionally hard or extended starting

What it costs to fix

Typical range: $80–$550 · about ~0.5–2 hrs of labor

If the cause is…PartLabor
Fuel injector (single)$50$300~0.5–2 hrs
Wiring / connector repair$10$60~0.5–1.5 hrs

On many V6 engines the rear-bank injectors are the hard ones to reach, and some designs require pulling the intake manifold — that's what pushes labor to the top of the range. Figures are for common gasoline port and direct-injection engines; diesel and high-pressure DI injectors cost considerably more.

Frequently asked

What's a noid light and why would I use one for P0206?

A noid light is a cheap tester that plugs into the injector connector in place of the injector. If it flashes while cranking, the computer and wiring are delivering the pulse and the injector itself is the suspect. If it stays dark, the fault is upstream in the wiring, connector, or computer.

Can I drive to the shop with P0206?

A short, gentle drive with a steady check-engine light is usually acceptable. The concern is catalytic-converter damage from the unburned fuel of a dead cylinder, so avoid hard acceleration and long trips — and if the light is flashing, have it towed instead.

Which cylinder is number 6 on my engine?

There's no universal answer — numbering conventions differ by manufacturer and engine layout. On a V6 it may be the last cylinder on either bank depending on the brand. Confirm with a cylinder-layout diagram for your specific engine before testing.

Could the engine computer itself cause P0206?

It can, but it's the least likely cause and should be the last thing you condemn. Rule out the connector, the harness wiring, and the injector's internal winding first — those account for the overwhelming majority of injector-circuit codes.
