What P0171 usually means on a Highlander
P0171 tells you the Highlander is running lean on bank 1 — the ECU is adding fuel to make up for extra air or a fuel shortfall. On these engines it usually comes down to a contaminated mass-airflow sensor or an unmetered-air leak from an aging PCV hose or intake gasket. Higher-mileage Highlanders can also drift lean from a weak fuel pump or tired injectors. The SUV may idle unevenly, hesitate, or surge, and a bad enough lean condition can misfire.
