P0011 on a Honda Civic
Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
K24 and R18 Civics with VTC (Variable Timing Control).
What P0011 usually means on a Civic
P0011 indicates the intake cam timing is more advanced than commanded on the Civic's VTC system. On Honda's K-series and R18 this is closely tied to the VTC actuator - the same part responsible for the well-known cold-start rattle - and to the condition of the oil feeding the cam phaser. Dirty or low oil is a frequent trigger because the VTC actuator is oil-pressure driven. It often surfaces as a brief startup rattle before the code appears.
Most likely causes on this model
- Worn VTC actuator
Honda's VTC actuator wears and rattles on cold start; when it cannot hold timing it sets P0011.
- Dirty or low engine oil
The oil-pressure-driven cam phaser mis-times when oil is old, low, or the wrong viscosity.
- Stuck VTC oil control (spool) valve
A gummed cam-timing solenoid cannot regulate pressure and lets the cam over-advance.
- Clogged oil control valve screen
Sludge in the OCV filter screen restricts flow to the phaser.
What it costs on a Civic
Start with an oil change to the correct spec and a cam-timing (VTC) solenoid, both modest costs, before assuming the actuator. A VTC actuator replacement is more involved because it sits on the cam sprocket, raising labor. Many Civics are fixed for well under a major-repair figure by addressing oil and the solenoid first.
Fixing it
On the Civic, try fresh correct-viscosity oil and a new VTC oil control valve before condemning the actuator; the infamous cold-start rattle without a persistent code is often lived with rather than repaired.
