P0011 on a Honda Accord
Camshaft Position Timing Over-Advanced (Bank 1)
K24 four-cylinder Accords with VTC.
What P0011 usually means on a Accord
P0011 means the intake camshaft is timed further advanced than the ECU commanded on the Accord's VTC system. On the K24 this ties directly to the VTC actuator - the source of Honda's familiar cold-start rattle - and to the condition of the oil that drives the cam phaser. Old, low, or wrong-viscosity oil is a frequent trigger. It often begins as a one-second rattle at startup before a code ever sets.
Most likely causes on this model
- Worn VTC actuator
The K24 VTC actuator wears and rattles cold; when it cannot hold timing it sets P0011.
- Old or low engine oil
The oil-driven phaser mis-times with degraded or insufficient oil.
- Stuck cam-timing oil control valve
A gummed spool valve lets the intake cam over-advance.
- Sludged OCV screen
A restricted oil control valve screen starves the phaser of clean pressure.
What it costs on a Accord
An oil change to the correct spec plus a VTC solenoid are the affordable first steps and fix many Accords. The VTC actuator itself is more labor because it lives on the cam sprocket. Addressing oil and the solenoid first commonly avoids the larger actuator bill.
Fixing it
On the K24 Accord, fresh correct-viscosity oil and a new cam-timing oil control valve should precede any actuator replacement; a brief cold-start rattle without a stored code is often monitored rather than repaired.
