What this code means
P0462 means the fuel level sensor's signal is stuck below its valid range — on most cars that shows up as a gauge pinned at empty (or full, depending on the circuit design) no matter how much fuel is in the tank, often with the low-fuel light glued on. Where P0461 is an erratic-signal code, P0462 is usually a hard fault: a shorted sender, a signal wire shorted to ground, or a float arm that has fallen or jammed at the bottom of its travel. The sender is a float sweeping a resistor track inside the tank, typically integrated with the fuel pump module. The engine runs perfectly with this code, but the gauge is now lying to you, and the computer may also skip EVAP leak tests it can't schedule without a trustworthy fuel level.
