What this code means

P0461 means the fuel level sensor's signal isn't behaving plausibly — typically the reading barely changes even as fuel is burned or added, or it jumps around erratically. The sensor is the sending unit inside the fuel tank: a float on an arm sweeping across a resistor track, usually part of the fuel pump module. The classic failure is a worn spot on that resistor track (often at the fuel level the tank spends the most time at), so the gauge sticks or skips through part of its range. A sticking float arm or float that has absorbed fuel can do the same. Beyond an untrustworthy gauge, there's a hidden cost: the computer uses fuel level to decide when to run EVAP leak tests, so a bad sender can quietly keep the EVAP monitor from ever completing. The part is cheap-to-moderate, but labor varies enormously depending on whether your car has an access cover or needs the tank dropped.
