What this code means

P0443 is an electrical code: the computer detected a problem in the circuit that controls the EVAP purge valve, the solenoid that releases stored fuel vapors from the charcoal canister into the engine. Unlike P0441, which is about wrong flow, this code means the solenoid's electrical side isn't behaving — typically a failed solenoid coil, a broken or shorted wire, or a corroded connector. The purge valve is one of the most-replaced EVAP parts because its solenoid simply wears out with constant cycling. The car will almost always drive completely normally with this code, since the only real effect is on emissions. Diagnosis is straightforward: check the connector, measure the solenoid's resistance, and verify the circuit has power and a good control signal. If the valve itself has failed electrically, it's usually a cheap, quick replacement.

How to fix P0443

Easy — basic tools, most owners can do this

  1. Inspect the purge valve connector

    Unplug the connector at the purge valve and look for green corrosion, bent pins, or a loose fit. A dirty or backed-out terminal is a free fix and a surprisingly common cause of a circuit code.

  2. Measure the solenoid's resistance

    Put a multimeter across the valve's two terminals and compare against the spec for your vehicle (most purge solenoids read in the tens of ohms). A reading near zero (shorted) or infinite (open coil) condemns the valve itself.

  3. Confirm the circuit has power

    With the key on, back-probe the connector's feed wire for battery voltage and check the relevant fuse. Power present plus a good solenoid shifts suspicion to the control-side wiring back to the computer.

  4. Replace the purge valve

    If the coil measured open or shorted, swap the valve — it's usually held by a bracket clip and two hoses right in the engine bay. This is the most common resolution for P0443 because the solenoid simply wears out from constant cycling.

  5. Repair the wiring if the valve tests good

    A good solenoid with power present means a broken or chafed wire between the valve and the computer. Wiggle-test the harness while watching a scan tool, and repair the damaged section with solder and heat shrink rather than a twist-and-tape splice.

DIY or shop? This is a genuinely beginner-friendly electrical diagnosis: one connector, two terminals, and a multimeter tell you almost everything.
