What this code means
P0354 flags an electrical fault — an open or a short — in the primary or secondary circuit of ignition Coil D, which serves cylinder 4 on coil-on-plug engines. The ECM drives each coil individually and checks the circuit every firing event, so it knows exactly which coil's circuit misbehaved; the coil letters simply count up with the cylinders (Coil A = cylinder 1, B = 2, C = 3, D = 4). Because the spark for cylinder 4 disappears entirely, the matching misfire code P0304 almost always sets with it. Don't confuse this with a worn spark plug: a tired plug weakens the spark but keeps the circuit electrically whole, while P0354 means the circuit itself failed. How to fix P0354
Easy — basic tools, most owners can do this
- Check the connection at cylinder 4's coil
Disconnect the plug on coil D (cylinder 4) and inspect both halves for corrosion, oil wicking up the wires, and terminals that have lost their grip. Reseat it until the tab clicks, clear the code, and retest — this free step resolves plenty of P0354s.
- Move coil 4 to a different cylinder
Swap coil D with a coil from a healthy cylinder, clear the code, and drive. The code following the coil (becoming P0351–P0353) means buy one coil; the code staying on cylinder 4 means the wiring is the suspect.

With the key on, check for battery voltage at the coil 4 connector feed. If power is present but the code persists with a known-good coil, the control wire between the connector and the computer has an open or short.
